Ahead of the resumption of academic activities at the University of Ilorin, the Director of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit, Prof. Rowland Monday Kayode, has disclosed that it has released a total of 5,600 students of the University to undergo practical training for the 2023/2024 academic session across the country.

Prof. Kayode disclosed this last Thursday (September 12, 2024) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

The Director said that those students on training cut across 18 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory, out of which over 1,400 are carrying out their industrial training (IT) in Kwara State, 600 and 130 are doing so in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory, respectively, while the remaining students are spread across other states of the federation.

The don pointed out that both the Institutional and Departmental Coordinators of SIWES have been supervising the students since July, 2024, adding that more than 70% of the students have been physically supervised.

Prof. Kayode added that his Unit is presently making use of the virtual facilities of the Postgraduate School to supervise students that missed the physical supervision and those in security challenged areas of the country.

The Director added that “the reports from the companies, industries and establishments where our students are engaged in IT indicated that students of the institution are doing very well”.

He remarked that it had been amazing that some of the companies and industries visited promised to employ some of them after graduation from the University and completion of their national youth service programme.

Prof. Kayode commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his unflinching support for the SIWES Unit as he added that for over two decades, the University has been enjoying unprecedented harmony, which has been aiding effective teaching and learning.

The SIWES Director admonished students on industrial training across various sectors of the country to maintain very high standard of commitment to acquisition of practical knowledge and also apply the knowledge acquired to real work situation in order to bridge the gap between theory and practice. “This will better prepare them for future job opportunities”, he said.
